Pronounced “ˈfjuːɡ/fyoog/fyüg”

For those of you who aren’t privy to formal musical terms, a “fugue” is composition that builds upon a recurring musical theme and often includes lots of codas; it has more recently become more of an adjective than a noun, describing a style of writing.  Whichever way you choose to define it, Fugue are fulfilling their namesake.  Hailing from nearby Connecticut for the past almost 2 years, they have managed to churn out 2 compelling EPs, Ancient Glass EP and the freshly released Siblings EP.  I’ve been spinning the former frequently for the past few weeks and found it to feel like a freeform phenomenon of function and fortitude.  Just like you can’t quite fit all of the members into your camera frame, you can’t fit their sound into a box.   Each song remains unique while maintaining the Fugue-esque structure and sound, spinning a sufficient web of sticky, sweet patterns and rhythms punctuated by peppery percussion and resounding synth and cymbals.

I had the distinct privilege of hosting Fugue at a house show last week and was stoked to see them live.  While house shows can sometimes be too loud and overwhelming to meet any new friends, I was happy to have the chance to encounter each member of the band throughout the night.  I learned their names (Matt, Peter (i love to hate nyc), Alexa, Annis, Mike, and Brian) to ensure that I could drunkenly shout for/at them throughout their face-melting set.  Down-to-earth, respectful, talented. and fun-loving, they were all a venue can hope for in band.  This band is taking off, so if you want to keep up, I suggest you do the following:  1. Download the Ancient Glass EP now 2. Listen to it repeatedly 3. Catch them at a live show near you and give them hugs 4. Scrounge up your leftover laundry money and PAY for their latest effort, Siblings If you find yourself worried about the lack of clean clothes, make this your mantra: “I’m wearing the same clothes as yesterday, and the day before, and the day before.”  That’s right, next stop…Babetown.
